In recent days, the water level in the Teesta River has been rising due to heavy rainfall. Yesterday, India released nearly 11,000 cubic meters per second (cumecs) of water in two phases from the Gajoldoba Barrage without prior notice to Bangladesh. According to Bangladesh’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, they were not informed in advance about this significant release of water.
A cumec is a unit that measures how many cubic meters of water flow per second. One cubic foot per second, approximately 28.31 liters, is called a cusec, and 35.31 cusecs equal one cumec.

Executive Engineer of the Bangladesh Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, Sardar Udoy Raihan, stated, “There is no official information or prior notice from India regarding the extra water release.”
The Teesta River is an international river that originates from the Himalayas and flows through Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Jalpaiguri in India before entering Bangladesh. The lack of proper communication between the two countries regarding water releases may complicate flood management efforts in Bangladesh.
