The High Court has removed the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from the investigation of the Sagar-Runi murder case, which involves the brutal killing of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi. The court has directed the Home Ministry to establish a high-powered task force to take over the investigation and submit a report within six months.
The ruling was issued on Monday, September 30, by a High Court bench led by Justice Farah Mahbub in response to a state petition. This decision comes after RAB’s failure to conclude the investigation despite almost 12 years of efforts.
On September 29, lawyer Shishir Monir was appointed for the first time in the case by Naosher Ali Roman, brother of Meherun Runi and the plaintiff. Monir stated that, according to Section 493 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, a complainant has the right to appoint an independent lawyer. He emphasized that further investigation is necessary, using existing clues.
The case dates back to February 11, 2012, when Sagar and Runi were found murdered in their Dhaka apartment. Despite repeated investigative efforts, no progress has been made. RAB, which took over in April 2012, has requested 111 time extensions without delivering a final report.
