The court has acquitted BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, from a sedition case filed by a leader of Noakhali district Jubo League. This verdict was delivered on Tuesday morning by Judge Ahsan Tariq of the District Special Judge’s Court, following hearings from both sides.
According to the case, on December 15, 2014, at 9 p.m. Bangladesh time, Tarique Rahman, while in London, made derogatory remarks about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, calling him a “Rajakar,” “killer,” and “Pakbondhu,” and allegedly sought to undermine Bangladesh’s sovereignty by denying its emergence.
On September 17, 2017, the investigating officers, SI Sikdar Md. Saiful Islam and SI Md. Jasim Uddin of Begumganj Model Police Station, submitted a charge sheet accusing Tarique Rahman after their investigation. However, on Monday, four witnesses testified in court, stating they had no knowledge of the incident.
On Tuesday morning, after hearing the arguments from both sides, the court acquitted Tarique Rahman, stating that no substantial evidence was presented to support the accusations.
