Mahmudur Rahman, the acting editor of Amar Desh, has been granted bail by a Dhaka court. On Thursday (October 3), Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge A.S.M. Zoglul Hossain approved his bail in connection with the case involving a plot to abduct and murder Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Rahman was named in the case for allegedly conspiring to abduct and kill Joy in the U.S. back in 2011. He had been living abroad as a fugitive but was arrested upon his return to Bangladesh on September 29. According to case documents, in 2011, Rahman, along with others, allegedly planned to abduct Joy. The case was filed by Fazlur Rahman, a former inspector of the Detective Branch (DB) police, on August 3, 2015, at the Paltan Model Police Station.
On February 19, 2018, police submitted a charge sheet against five individuals, including journalists Shafik Rehman and Mahmudur Rahman. The court heard testimonies from 12 witnesses, including Joy. On August 17, 2023, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor sentenced Rahman and four others to seven years in prison. At that time, Rahman was abroad, and an arrest warrant was issued against him.
