Continuous heavy rainfall and flash floods from upstream have left thousands of families stranded in Sherpur. Roads and agricultural lands are submerged, while new areas in Mymensingh’s Dhobaura and surrounding regions have been affected by flooding.
In Sherpur’s Nalitabari and Jhinaigati upazilas, around 50,000 people are facing severe hardship. According to local administration, nearly 20 villages in 13 unions, including the Nalitabari municipality, and 25 villages in 9 unions of Jhinaigati upazila, are inundated. Rescue operations and distribution of dry food are being carried out by the army, police, and volunteer groups.
The Water Development Board reports that water levels in the Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers are flowing above the danger mark. However, water levels in the Maharashi and Someshwari rivers in Jhinaigati have receded slightly. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall starting Thursday evening has caused severe flooding in at least 20 villages across Mymensingh’s South Maizpara, Gamaritola, Ghoshgao, and Porakandulia unions.
Additionally, water flowing downstream has breached the embankment of the Netai River, causing floods in residential areas. Homes, ponds, and roads have been submerged, and there is a growing shortage of food and clean drinking water in the flood-affected regions.
