The High Court has accepted a petition filed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir seeking the annulment of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution. The petition was accepted on Tuesday, October 29.
A hearing on the petition is scheduled for tomorrow (October 30), before a dual bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury. Earlier, on Sunday afternoon, Mirza Fakhrul personally appeared at the High Court to submit the petition.
The 15th Amendment was introduced in 2011 under the Awami League government, which abolished the caretaker government system. The amendment officially recognized Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the Father of the Nation and reinstated secularism along with religious freedom in the Constitution.
However, political circumstances shifted following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, leading to legal challenges questioning the validity of the amendment. On August 19, the legitimacy of the 15th Amendment was formally raised in the High Court.
