Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), asserted that advancing reform efforts while associates remain in key state positions is not feasible. He delivered these remarks during a virtual greeting exchange with the Hindu community in celebration of Durga Puja, held at the Ladies Club in Dhaka on Tuesday evening.

Rahman stated, “Defeated forces and their allies are working to undermine the interim government. Therefore, BNP believes that this government must not be allowed to fail in any circumstance.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining a functioning government for the benefit of the nation.

He also highlighted the initiatives taken by the interim government, saying, “To repair the fragile state left by the mafia government, various reform commissions have already been established. Completing the ongoing reform efforts after 15 years of chaos is a monumental task. However, it is crucial that, in the process of implementing these reforms, the government addresses the daily hardships faced by the people. If not, the legitimacy of the government’s reform efforts will come into question.”

Rahman further criticized the past regime, stating, “For the last 15 years, the country has suffered from a lack of democracy and rule of law due to the misrule of the mafia government. Thousands of leaders and activists from opposition parties have been subjected to enforced disappearances and killings.”

The event, presided over by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was attended by several party leaders, including Dr. Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, and others from the BNP’s Standing Committee.

Representatives from the Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist, Christian Welfare Front, including Chairman Bijan Kanti Sarker and General Secretary S.N. Tarun Dey, were also present, along with various community leaders from different districts. They expressed solidarity and support for the BNP’s ongoing efforts and discussed the importance of unity among different communities in the face of current challenges.
