BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, currently residing in London, advised the government to avoid making hasty decisions regarding constitutional and security matters. During a virtual exchange of greetings with members of the Hindu community, he emphasized the importance of maintaining national unity to thwart any potential plots from malicious entities.
Tarique noted that there are ongoing discussions among political parties and the government concerning the formation of an interim government. He addressed concerns about whether the interim government had been sworn in under the current constitution or if it could be considered a revolutionary government. He warned that such questions could undermine the government’s effectiveness and divert it from its objectives.
He stated, “The BNP believes it is crucial to avoid impulsive decisions on issues directly related to national security or constitutional provisions. A well-considered approach is necessary to address future challenges effectively.” Tarique acknowledged that some differences among political parties have emerged since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s regime on August 5 but expressed confidence that all parties share a common goal: establishing a discrimination-free, democratic, and humane Bangladesh.
Tarique asserted that securing the political and economic empowerment of the people would prevent anyone from depriving them of their freedom. He underscored the importance of the interim government’s success, warning that its failure would hinder pro-democratic and pro-Bangladesh forces. He urged members of various religious communities not to be misled by conspiracies or rumors propagated by the Awami League’s associates.
In his greetings to the Hindu community, he declared, “This Bangladesh is for all of us, regardless of our beliefs. It is not about being a so-called minority or majority; our only identity is that we are all Bangladeshis.” He reiterated that the rights of all citizens are equally important and emphasized that governance will prioritize meritocracy.
Reflecting on the injustices faced by Hindus and other communities during the 15 years of Awami League rule, Tarique expressed hope for a future where individuals from all religions can safely celebrate their religious events. He conveyed a clear message: “Religion is for individuals, and everyone has the right to security. I urge you not to respond to any provocations from the fugitive dictator and their associates.”
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Kalyan Front organized the event at the Dhaka Ladies Club in Eskaton to greet Hindu community members and discuss the Durga Puja, celebrated from October 9-12. The program featured several BNP standing committee members, including Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, AZM Zahid Hossain, and Gonoforum General Secretary Subrata Chowdhury, with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir presiding.
