Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested former Housing and Public Works Minister and four-time Member of Parliament Ubaidul Muqtadir Chowdhury.
According to Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Rezaul Karim Mallik, the arrest took place in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on Thursday night, October 31. Mallik informed the media on Friday, November 1, that Chowdhury faces multiple murder charges. Following his arrest, police are preparing to present him in court with a remand application for further investigation.
Ubaidul Muqtadir Chowdhury, a former MP for the Brahmanbaria-3 constituency, first entered parliament through a by-election in 2011. He was subsequently re-elected in the 10th National Parliament Election on January 5, 2014, marking the start of his consecutive terms in office. Most recently, on January 7, 2024, Chowdhury secured his seat for a fourth term by defeating his opponent in the 12th National Parliament Election.
A distinguished public servant, Chowdhury began his career in the administration cadre in 1983 after passing the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination. In 1986, he took on the role of personal assistant to Sheikh Hasina, who was then the Leader of the Opposition in the National Parliament. His career has since encompassed a series of influential positions, leading up to his tenure as the Minister of Housing and Public Works.
Chowdhury’s arrest has raised significant attention, especially given his longstanding political career and the grave charges he faces. Police officials indicated that they would continue to investigate further, using the remand to clarify his involvement in the cases against him.
