Dhaka Metropolitan South’s President of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Road Transport Workers’ Party, and an accused in the murder case of journalist Hasan Mahmud, Zakia Sultana, General Secretary of the Patuakhali District Women’s League, has been arrested by the police.
On Friday, November 1, Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Division announced this information in a press release.
According to the release, Zakia Sultana was arrested around 11:30 AM on Thursday, October 31, from a room in the Pir Yamin Hotel in Gulistan.
The release further states that the complainant, Fatema, is the wife of Hasan Mahmud, who served as the President of the Dhaka Metropolitan South’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Road Transport Workers’ Party and was a journalist by profession. Hasan Mahmud went missing after leaving his home around 1:30 AM on July 31 and did not return. Fatema later learned that around 50 to 60 unidentified individuals, some in plain clothes and armed, had abducted her husband.
It was also mentioned that Fatema later discovered her husband’s body lying on the road in front of the Gorhan Chapra Mosque. When she reached the scene at approximately 5:30 AM, Hasan Mahmud was declared dead by the on-duty doctor at Mugda Medical Hospital.
In connection with the incident, Fatema filed a murder case on August 30 at Khilgaon Police Station, naming 35 individuals and including an additional 50 to 60 unnamed suspects.
Following the filing of the case, police initiated an operation to arrest the suspects. In line with this, they arrested Zakia Sultana based on confidential information from a room in the Pir Yamin Hotel in Gulistan. Legal proceedings against her are underway, and efforts to investigate the case thoroughly and apprehend other involved individuals are ongoing.
