A Case of Political Repression Targeting Opposition Parties in BD

Shakib
Bangladesh Police arrested the younger brother of Elahhi Russel, a BNP’s Student Wing leader in Ramgati Upazila, Lakshmipur, Bangladesh,

Shakib Ahmed is not involved in politics and works at a mobile phone shop in Azadnagar Bazar after passing his SSC exam.

The incident reveals that there are several flaws in the police’s arrest decision.

  • Firstly, Shakib is not affiliated with any political party, his family claimed. This suggests that his arrest is not justified based on political involvement.
  • Secondly, the timing of the arrest, conducted at 1:30 am by breaking into Shakib’s tin-roofed house, raises serious concerns about the police’s adherence to human rights principles. Such a forceful and disruptive raid at an ungodly hour is unacceptable.
  • Thirdly, the police must obtain permission from the CEC to arrest any political activists after the announcement of the election schedule. However, the police have disregarded this requirement.
  • Fourthly, the police’s claim that Shakib is a Jubo Dal (BNP Youth Wing) activist is illogical and contradicts their own assertion that his elder brother is a Student Wing leader. It is improbable that Shakib would be involved in the Youth Wing before his elder brother.

Moreover, as a student himself, it would be more natural for Shakib to start with the Student Wing. The police’s insistence on Shakib’s involvement in the Youth Wing despite these inconsistencies casts doubt on the credibility of their accusations. In conclusion, the arrest of Shakib appears to be a case of political repression targeting opposition parties in Bangladesh.
