Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the head advisor of the interim government, remarked in an interview with the British newspaper Financial Times that there is no place for Sheikh Hasina’s fascist regime in Bangladesh.

He stated that the Awami League exhibited all characteristics of fascism during its time in power. Considering the near future, he believes the Awami League has no place in Bangladesh’s politics. However, Dr. Yunus clarified that the fate of the Awami League will not be determined by the interim government.

According to Dr. Yunus, the people were deprived of freedom under the Awami League’s rule, as the party occupied every political space and acted purely in its own interest.

He further added that the decision regarding the Awami League’s participation in elections must be reached through consensus among all political parties. Dr. Yunus mentioned that even if charges of crimes against humanity are filed against Sheikh Hasina, the government will not immediately request her extradition from India. However, if she is convicted, efforts will be made to bring her back under a prisoner exchange agreement.

During the interview, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate expressed dissatisfaction with India’s level of cooperation. He emphasized the importance of maintaining good relations between the two neighboring countries.
