Dhaka: On his visit to Dhaka, UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk has called for the assurance of human rights in all types of reforms in Bangladesh. He met with legal advisor Professor Asif Nazrul at the Secretariat during his two-day visit on Tuesday.
In the meeting, Turk emphasized the importance of establishing the rule of law and human rights in Bangladesh, stating, “I have urged to strengthen the Human Rights Commission to uphold human rights in Bangladesh.” He noted that the UN fact-finding mission is giving due attention to human rights violations during the protests in July and August.
After the meeting, Professor Asif Nazrul informed reporters that Turk inquired about the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and affirmed, “All legal rights will be provided to the accused in ICT cases.”
Nazrul further stated that Commissioner Turk expressed satisfaction regarding the initiative for judicial reforms and highlighted the importance of an independent judiciary. He mentioned, “The government may seek forensic or technical assistance from the UN for justice, ensuring that there will be no injustice this time, unlike in the past.”
