The interim government is committed to ensuring that every citizen’s human rights are upheld and will not repeat the mistakes and crimes of the previous administration, said Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He made this statement on Wednesday (October 30) during a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.
Dr. Yunus emphasized that the interim government is dedicated to balancing development with human rights. He also expressed gratitude to Volker Türk for his support during the movement and his visit to Bangladesh.
On the Rohingya issue, Dr. Yunus shared that the UN’s assistance has been sought to create a safe zone in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, ensuring that internally displaced people can remain close to their original region. Both Dr. Yunus and Volker Türk called for stronger ASEAN involvement and sustainable solutions to the Rohingya crisis.
Volker Türk noted that the UN Fact-Finding Mission is still investigating the atrocities committed during the recent uprisings. He expressed hope that the final report will be ready by the first week of December. They also discussed the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh and potential reforms of the commission investigating crimes against humanity.
Türk added that the UN’s human rights body is supporting efforts to investigate incidents of enforced disappearances. He mentioned the office’s intention to strengthen its presence in Dhaka and urged the chief adviser to ensure that Bangladesh’s Human Rights Commission functions independently and effectively.
