Bangladesh’s Interim Government Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, met with Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shahbaz Sharif, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting took place at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, September 24.
During the meeting, both leaders emphasized the need to revitalize bilateral cooperation between their countries. Dr. Yunus called for the revival of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) as a platform for enhancing regional collaboration and sought Pakistan’s support in this regard. He highlighted that reinvigorating SAARC could play a key role in boosting cooperation between Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Prime Minister Sharif welcomed the proposal to revive SAARC and suggested a phased approach for regional countries. He expressed interest in investing in Bangladesh’s textile and leather industries. Dr. Yunus proposed youth exchange programs between the two nations.
The leaders also discussed resuming talks at the foreign secretary level and reactivating the joint commission for bilateral cooperation. Also present were Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain and Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif.
