President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has reassured Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus that Bangladesh can “count on Europe’s support” as the country advances its reform initiatives. The assurance was made during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) yesterday. Von der Leyen emphasized the European Union’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s journey towards sustainable economic reforms, infrastructure development, and growth.

She highlighted Europe’s dedication to remaining a key partner under the EU’s Global Gateway initiative, which aims to address global infrastructure needs across digital, energy, and transport sectors. Bangladesh, recognized as a crucial partner in this initiative, stands to benefit from enhanced cooperation with the EU in developing its infrastructure and boosting its economic resilience.

Von der Leyen also pointed to the importance of utilizing the €400 million Bangladesh Renewable Energy Facility, an investment geared toward helping Bangladesh transition to greener energy sources. She urged both sides to “make the best” of this facility, which aims to foster sustainable energy production and reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. This initiative aligns with the EU’s broader climate goals, where Bangladesh is viewed as a significant partner in global renewable energy efforts.

In addition to his meeting with von der Leyen, Chief Adviser Professor Yunus held bilateral talks with Prime Minister of the Netherlands Dick Schoof on the sidelines of the UNGA. The two discussed areas of mutual cooperation, including sustainable development and future economic collaborations.
