Convener of BNP Media Cell and former MP Zahir Uddin Swapan was arrested from Gulshan-2 by the DB Police.

In the continuous crackdown by the Hasina regime, all the top leaders have been detained one by one.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has strongly protested the arrest of its senior leader Zahir Uddin Swapon by police from the capital’s Gulshan area on Friday evening.

In a statement, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi condemned the arrest as an attempt to silence the opposition and to create a climate of fear and intimidation. He said that the government is “scared” of the BNP’s growing popularity and is trying to suppress the party by arresting its leaders and activists.

Mr. Rizvi also accused the government of corruption and mismanagement. He said that the government is only interested in looting the country’s resources and amassing wealth for itself. He said that the arrest of Swapon is a sign of the government’s growing desperation and its fear of being exposed.

BNP has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Zahir Uddin Swapon. The party has also warned the government of “serious consequences” if it does not stop its repression of the opposition.

The arrest of Swapon has been widely condemned by civil society groups and human rights organizations. They have called on the government to release Swapon and all other political prisoners immediately.
